German Apitherapy Congress

I recently had the privilege of attending the 19th International Apitherapy Congress, hosted by the German Apitherapy Association in the serene town of Bad Königshofen. The event was held from March 22 to 24, 2024, followed by a hands-on workshop on March 25. It was an enlightening experience that brought together experts, enthusiasts, and practitioners from around the world to explore the fascinating world of apitherapy—a field dedicated to the therapeutic use of bee products such as honey, propolis, royal jelly, and even bee venom.

The congress kicked off with a warm welcome and the official opening of the Api-Expo, a dedicated space where innovative apitherapy products and technologies were showcased. One of the highlights was a presentation by Dipl.-Ing. Gerhard Goldsche on a new mobile hive air extraction device. This innovative tool, capable of extracting hive air at rates of 0.5 to 1.5 liters per minute per beehive, promises to revolutionize the way hive air is utilized in therapeutic practices.

The congress also provided a global perspective on apitherapy, with lectures covering diverse topics such as apitourism in Turkey, healthy bee colonies maintained through chemical-free treatment, and the role of bees in wound treatment. One of the most memorable moments was a presentation by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Tautz, who shared his latest research on the incredible world of bees, including the quirky fact that bees have "sweaty feet." His enthusiasm for the subject was infectious, and his new book on the topic was a hot commodity among attendees.

The congress concluded with a visit to the educational apiary and the beehive air station of the Bad Königshofen Beekeeping Association. This hands-on experience allowed us to see the practical applications of the knowledge shared during the congress. It was a fitting end to an event that was not only educational but also deeply inspiring.
